The posthumous memoirs of Lucky Luciano may well have cost him his life. The partner of Meyer Lanksy and Bugsy Siegel, the man who created and controlled the “Commission” and the set down the rules, wanted to have his side of the story on record. It would appear that most of the activities of Luciano coincide with the history of the Mafia in America in the first half of the twentieth century and beyond.

For the film version of his life, the famous New York gangster, in his golden exile in Naples, dictated the main events of his life to the producer Martin A. Gosch. In the United States, however, the new bosses of the Mafia were not exactly amused by the whole project that was now virtually ready to go into a screenplay. They undoubtedly expressed their discontent to “Charlie Lucky” by hinting to remember the idea no more. But Lucania proceeded anyway, driven by the need to tell all and somehow explain.
